BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Top-ranked Santa Margarita escaped with a five-game victory over Fountain Valley in a nonleague boys’ volleyball match Monday at Fountain Valley. But that’s not about what people are buzzing.

Fountain Valley’s Nate Hagstrom had 69 kills in the loss. Yes, 69 kills.

The state record for kills in a match is 75, according to the Cal-Hi Sports Record Book. That was set in 1995 by Steve Talbot of Pasadena La Salle in a five-game match against Glendale Academy. There is no official Orange County record for the category.

“I scoffed at those numbers when I saw them,” said UC Irvine Coach Charlie Brande, who first started coaching in 1975 at Newport Harbor High. “I’ve never heard of anything that high, but I guess it’s possible.”

Hagstrom, a 6-foot-5 senior who will play at Long Beach State next season, also had 15 hitting errors in his 98 attempts, but he still had a .551 hitting percentage in the 11-15, 15-6, 17-15, 16-18, 15-12 loss that took 3 hours 10 minutes.

“Those numbers are legitimate,” Santa Margarita Coach John Hawks said. “It seemed like he had 100 kills. We couldn’t stop the guy. We blocked him a few times in the fifth game but I kept thinking, ‘My goodness, when is this kid going to slow down?’ ”

TRACK AND FIELD

Former Huntington Beach High standout Scott Moser qualified for this weekend’s USATF Indoor Championships in Atlanta.

Competing for UCLA, Moser qualified by placing second in the shotput Saturday at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships in Flagstaff, Ariz. Moser, who holds the county high school record in the discus, recorded a mark of 63 feet 8 1/4 inches.

WRESTLING

Cal State Fullerton’s Babak Nejadmaghaddam took third in the 197-pound division of the Pacific 10 wrestling tournament Monday at Eugene, Ore., and earned a berth in the NCAA championships March 15-17 at Iowa City, Iowa.

Nejadmaghaddam, a senior with a 25-4 record, became the sixth Titan wrestler to qualify for the nationals at least three times. Laszlo Molnar is only Fullerton wrestler to qualify four times, advancing in 1991-94.
