Sixth-Ranked El Toro Beats No. 4 Eagles in Water Polo

Erica Nicholson, Ke’ala Carter and Nicole Sonnenfeld each scored two goals Tuesday to lead sixth-ranked El Toro to a 7-4 victory over No. 4 Santa Margarita in a nonleague girls’ water polo game at El Toro.

Kristina, Katy and Kacy Kunkel each scored a goal for Santa Margarita (11-4).

El Toro (12-4) led, 3-1, at the half and held a two-goal lead entering the final quarter.

In other nonleague games:

No. 9 Laguna Beach 11, Mission Viejo 3--Laura Case and Teresa Codini each scored five goals for Laguna Beach (15-4), which overcame a slow start and a 2-1 halftime deficit. Case also had 10 steals for visiting Laguna Beach, which scored 10 second-half goals.

Western 12, Lakewood St. Joseph 3--Alie Hower scored five goals for host Western (9-5), which led, 4-0, at the half.

Woodbridge 9, Dana Hills 5--Rochelle Gauthier had four goals, five steals and four assists to lead Woodbridge. Her sister, Jacquelyn, scored three goals.

In the Century League:

No. 1 Foothill 19, Santa Ana Valley 1--Gabbie Domanic scored six goals and Brittany Hayes had four for visiting Foothill (15-1, 2-0), which opened a 9-1 halftime lead.

In the Freeway League:

Buena Park 8, Sonora 5--Megan Henry scored four goals and Alissa Walker had two for Buena Park (7-7, 3-0). Cristal Smith had 11 saves, including a blocked penalty shot, for the Coyotes.

In the Orange League:

Brea Olinda 11, Savanna 8--Andrea Lanzisera had four goals and two steals and Alley Kane and Jolene Wagner added two goals each for Brea Olinda (11-6, 3-0).

Sharece Mathews scored four goals and Andrea Barraza had two for Savanna (15-6, 1-1).

Valencia 9, Magnolia 3--Paulette Flores and Marissa McKenzie scored two goals each for host Valencia (7-8, 1-1).

In Academy League boys’ basketball:

St. Margaret’s 59, Fairmont 49--Crandall Kermott scored 22 points, Paul Janczyk added 16 and Ed Ortega had 10 assists for St. Margaret’s (10-9, 2-1).

Will Washington scored a game-high 29 points for Fairmont (12-4, 2-2).

In the Century League:

Foothill 60, El Modena 44--Chad Bigler had 26 points and his younger brother Brett had seven points, 10 assists and five steals to lead visiting Foothill (10-10, 2-2) to the win.

No. 4 Villa Park 54, Santa Ana Valley 26--Matt MacGinnis scored 10 points and Kyle Egkan had eight for Villa Park (15-3, 4-0) which remained unbeaten in league. Villa Park allowed just three first-half points and held Santa Ana Valley (9-11, 1-2) scoreless in the second quarter.

In the Olympic League:

Brethren Christian 56, Whittier Christian 41--Kyle Painter had 16 points, eight rebounds and seven assists for Brethren Christian (6-12, 1-3). Hosea Brown scored 12 points and Brett Cooley and Eric MacDonald had 10 each for the Warriors.

Calvary Chapel 56, Cerritos Valley Christian 52--Isaiah Barney made four free throws in the final 42 seconds to secure the victory and first place in league for host Calvary Chapel (13-4, 4-0).

Tony Olivas led the Eagles with 15 points.

Orange Lutheran 84, Maranatha 59-- Darrell Jenkins had 31 points, including four three-pointers and five steals, and Marc Taylor added 22 points and nine rebounds for Orange Lutheran (7-9, 4-0).

In Academy League boys’ soccer:

St. Margaret’s 5, Capistrano Valley Christian 0--Parker Redmond, Brent Commerford, Alain Kinaly, Erik Hallenbeck and Ryan Birthcer scored for St. Margaret’s (10-4-1, 3-0).

In the Olympic League:

Cerritos Valley Christian 2, Calvary Chapel 0--Calvary Chapel’s David Linzey made seven saves in the first half to keep the game scoreless, but Valley Christian broke through with two goals in the second half for the victory at Harvard Park.

Linzey finished with 16 saves.

In the Orange League:

No. 10 Brea Olinda 4, Magnolia 0--Kory Felix, Adam Thorpe, Travis Guzik and Danny Yezarski each scored a goal for visiting Brea Olinda (17-1, 2-0).

In the South Coast League:

El Toro 3, San Clemente 2--Dennis Giakos, Matt Rolfe and Doug Franco scored first-half goals for El Toro (8-5-2, 1-0-1).

In Golden West League wrestling:

No. 2 Santa Ana 67, Tustin 10--Ray Arebalo (112), Luis Cuellar (119), Ramero Silvar (125) and Jamie Orendain (160) all scored pins for Santa Ana (6-0, 1-0), which led, 55-0, at one point.
