Chevron to Pay Fines for Air Quality Violations
Chevron has agreed to pay $300,000 in fines for failing to meet air quality standards at its Richmond refinery, including infractions that contributed to a fiery explosion in 1999, according to a settlement announced Monday.
The 52 violations span from 1998 until May, and account for some of the factors that led to the blaze, which sent hundreds to hospitals complaining of breathing difficulty and eye irritation.
The fines are among the highest against a Bay Area refinery, said Lucia Libretti, spokeswoman for the Bay Area Air Quality Management District.
