Alberto Garcia Aspe scored the tiebreaking goal in the 65th minute Wednesday night, and Mexico beat Uruguay, 2-1, to advance to the final of the Copa America.

Mexico returned to the championship game for the first time since 1993 and will play the winner of today’s semifinal between Colombia and Honduras. The final is Sunday.

The Copa America is the South American championship, but Mexico, Honduras and Costa Rica were invited from the North and Central American and Caribbean region.

Jared Borgetti, Mexico’s top forward, returned from a one-game suspension and scored in the 13th minute off an Aspe pass.

Richard Morales tied the score in the 32nd minute on a header.

Bolivia played a man short after Carlos Morales was ejected by referee Angel Sanchez of Argentina in the final minute of the first half for a cleats-up tackle.

Mexico was awarded a penalty kick when forward Antonio de Nigris was leveled in the penalty area by Pablo Lima.

With three minutes left, Aspe was ejected for a hard foul on Fabian Estoyanoff. Mexico’s Manuel Vidrio and Uruguay’s Richard Morales were also ejected in injury time.

Aspe and Vidrio will be suspended for the final.
