Daze, Rubalcaba Lead North in All-Star Volleyball

Co-MVPs Jonathan Daze of Mater Dei and Robert Rubalcaba of Garden Grove helped the North rally to defeat the South, 9-25, 27-25, 15-11, in the Orange County all-star boys’ volleyball match Friday at Edison High.

In the girls’ match, San Clemente’s Christina Vick, who has committed to Santa Clara, earned MVP honors and led the South over the North, 25-21, 20-25, 15-13.

Twelve players from the boys’ match will participate in the Orange County vs. South Bay all-star match tonight at 7 at Redondo Union High. Admission is $5.

Santa Margarita’s Blake Robinson, who has committed to Princeton, and Irvine’s Kris Kraushaar (UCLA) lead the Orange County team.

Lindsey Nelson of Villa Park High, Anne Yelsey of Corona del Mar and Jeffrey Das of Troy will represent the Southern Section today and Sunday in the 28th Maze Cup, a team tennis competition for juniors between the Southern and Northern sections that will be played at Bakersfield Racquet Club.

Nelson, the second-ranked player nationally in the girls’ 16s, and Yelsey, an Ojai finalist in the girls’ 18s, will play in the girls’ 16 division. Das, ranked third in Southern California in the boys’ 16s, will play in the boys’ 16s.

Play begins at 9 a.m. today and ends at 5 p.m. On Sunday play begins at 9 a.m. and ends at noon.
