Coupe Wins Newport Tennis Event

Brandon Coupe defeated Michael Jessup, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, in the men’s open final of the Adoption Guild tennis tournament Sunday at the Newport Beach Tennis Club.

Scott Davis and David Pate partnered to win the men’s open doubles title, 3-6, 6-3, 3-1, after Coupe and Carlos Bustos had to retire.

Juan Cerda and Kathy May-Fritz won the open mixed doubles with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 victory over Desi McBride and Dina Birch-McBride.

BASKETBALL

Corona Centennial’s Jamal Williams converted a three-point play with 23 seconds remaining to help the Red team to a 95-87 victory in the fourth Roundball Extravaganza Sunday at Marina High.

Andre Patterson of L.A. Washington and Dijon Thompson of Redondo Beach Redondo Union were co-MVPs for the Red team, which defeated the Blue team led by Carson’s Akene Ibekwe, San Diego St. Augustine’s Floyd North and Moreno Valley Rancho Verde’s J.S. Nash.

In the premier girls’ game, team MVPs Megan Aaker of Laguna Hills High and Nancy Hatsushi of Costa Mesa led the Red team to an 83-68 victory over the Blue.

Brandi Davis of Sonora and Mallorie Winn of La Jolla The Bishop’s were MVPs for the Blue.

BASEBALL

The Orange County All-Star high school baseball game will be played at 7 p.m. today at Cal State Fullerton.

Dave Torres, who led Anaheim to a share of its first Orange League title since 1989, will coach the North. Mike Chapman, whose Aliso Niguel team reached the second round of the Southern Section Division I playoffs, will coach the South.

* Eddie Degerman, a right-handed pitcher from Granada Hills High, committed to UC Irvine. Degerman was 9-2 with a 1.51 ERA during the regular season and helped Granada Hills to the quarterfinals of the City Section playoffs.

* Dale Thayer of Santa Ana College and Edison High has committed to play at Chico State next season, Santa Ana Coach Don Sneddon said.

Thayer, a relief pitcher, was a first-team All-Orange Empire Conference selection in 2001 after posting a 4-2 record with a conference-leading eight saves. He had 43 strikeouts in 39 innings and finished the season with a 3.23 ERA.

Josue Lopez of Saddleback College has signed with Southeast Missouri State.

Lopez was drafted out of El Toro High by the Texas Rangers in 1999, but opted to play for Saddleback. He batted .287 with 10 doubles, five home runs and 32 RBIs this season. He was named to the all-Orange Empire Conference honorable mention list for the second time.

FOOTBALL

Esperanza running back Temitope Sonuyi, The Times’ Orange County Player of the Year, has been added to the North roster for the July 13 Orange County North-South prep all-star game at Orange Coast College.

Sonuyi initially thought he would have to miss the game to attend an orientation program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, but now can play, North Coach Julian Smilowitz said.

The addition of Sonuyi puts the North roster one man over its 36-player limit, but Smilowitz said “it’s been my experience that somebody drops himself” from the roster before the game.

WRESTLING

Tad Stricker was named Loara’s wrestling coach, Athletic Director Marty Johnson said. Stricker, a former Oklahoma State wrestler, has been an assistant at Loara for three years.
