Jones Transfers to Mater Dei, Williams to Price

Two of the region’s top young boys’ basketball players are transferring out of the area.

Marcel Jones, who started part-time as a 6-foot-4 freshman at Chaminade, is transferring to Santa Ana Mater Dei. The family is moving to Orange County for job reasons.

Sophomore Derrick Williams, a starter at Campbell Hall the last two seasons, is transferring to Price in L.A.

Track and Field

Sammie Freeman of Eisenhower High in Yakima, Wash., and Damaine Reed of Carson have signed with Cal State Northridge.

Freeman won the 4A Division title in the girls’ javelin in the Washington state championships with a career-best 164-6. She ranks fourth on the national list this year.

Reed was runner-up in the boys’ 400 meters in the California state meet at Hughes Stadium in Sacramento last Saturday and in the City Section championships on May 24.

He has a best of 47.63.

Baseball

Maury Cauchon of Quartz Hill has resigned as coach, school officials said.

All-Mission League outfielder Rob Lowenthal of Harvard-Westlake will walk on at USC.

Brian Trump of Montclair Prep and Richard Beckett of Crossroads have been selected co-players of the year in the Delphic League.

Chris Dickerson, a former Notre Dame outfielder, has been selected to the freshman All-American team by Collegiate Baseball magazine.

Football

The Ventura County Football Coaches Assn. seven on seven passing tournament will be from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday at Channel Islands High.

Westlake, Thousand Oaks, Camarillo, Royal, Ventura, Buena and Nordhoff are among the schools entered.
