Broadnax Named Coach of Rancho Alamitos Boys

Vern Broadnax, girls’ basketball coach at Rancho Alamitos for three seasons, has been named boys’ varsity coach, Athletic Director Dan Rankin said Tuesday.

Broadnax, who played at Tustin High, Santa Ana College and Chapman, replaces Dave Kirksey, who resigned to spend more time with his family. Kirksey will continue to coach boys’ varsity tennis at Rancho Alamitos.

Broadnax coached the Vaquero girls from 1997-2000 and compiled a 19-54 record.

* Northwood has hired Ron Hansen to coach girls’ basketball. Hansen, who has been involved in Irvine-area club basketball for 11 years, replaces the school’s first coach, Ryan Bettencourt, who lasted two seasons.

* Edison has hired Corey Kelly to coach girls’ basketball. Kelly previously coached the boys’ team for four years before spending last season as an assistant girls’ coach. He replaces Geoff Bell, who resigned after one season.

* A Cal Poly San Luis Obispo spokesman said the school has agreed to release former Capistrano Valley High and Orange Coast College guard Leah Wilde after one season. Wilde, a junior, averaged six minutes in 14 games last season for San Luis Obispo.

Former Vanguard standout Josh McLeish has been hired as the boys’ soccer coach at Edison High. He is son of Dave McLeish, the first boys’ soccer coach at Edison. Josh McLeish also coached at Marina and is the coach at Vanguard. He replaces Bryan Middleton, who was interim coach last season.
