Thousand Oaks’ bid to play in its first Southern Section boys’ final ended last Tuesday with a 68-64 overtime loss to El Toro in a Division I-AA semifinal at Westlake.

But the Lancers could have another standout team next season, when four of five starters are expected to return.

Kyle Kegley, Thousand Oaks’ career scoring leader, ended his high school career with the loss to top-seeded El Toro. But starters Ben Olson, Dave Anderson, Kevin Rex and Kasey Myers will return for a Lancer team that was 23-6.

Olson, a 6-foot-5 forward-center who is a highly regarded quarterback, averaged 16.6 points. Anderson, the point guard, averaged 9.8 points and 4.9 assists.

Rex averaged 6.3 points, with Myers at 5.0.

“We’ll be back,” Coach Rich Endres said.

Kegley, a 6-4 swingman, finished with 1,256 points in three seasons to break the previous Thousand Oaks career scoring record of 1,068 set by Jason Hartman from 1991-94.

Kegley, who averaged 17.2 points in his career, made 184 three-point baskets. Thousand Oaks does not know the school record in that category.

Tim Murray, the boys’ coach at Channel Islands from 1998-2000, will not return to that position next season after sitting out this season because of health and personal reasons.

Lance Fay guided Channel Islands to an 8-17 record as interim coach this season and has applied for the permanent job.

Channel Islands will accept applications for the position until Thursday and start conducting interviews shortly thereafter.
