Chandler Suffers Ankle Injury

Compton Dominguez High center Tyson Chandler, a potential lottery pick in the NBA draft, suffered an ankle injury during the Dons’ 77-55 Division II state regional semifinal victory over Inglewood Thursday night and was taken to the hospital for X-rays.

Chandler was injured with about seven minutes left while trying to grab a rebound. Dominguez led, 62-35, at the time of the injury.

Paramedics who were already on hand at the game attended to Chandler, who walked off the court. He was taken to Centinela Hospital Medical Center in Inglewood.

Dominguez will play Redondo Union, a 68-63 winner Thursday over Lakewood Mayfair, in the regional final Saturday at the Forum.

Santa Ana Mater Dei 61, Upland 56--Mater Dei needed help from several of its lesser-known players in the closing minutes of the Division I semifinal at Ocean View.

Guard Ricky Porter scored nine of his team-high 20 points in the fourth quarter as the Monarchs (31-2) rallied from a five-point deficit at the end of the third quarter.

Forward Mike Strawberry blocked a shot by Sheldon Pace that could have tied the score with less than 30 seconds left.

The top-seeded Monarchs advanced to play Fresno Clovis West, a 82-57 winner over Corona Centennial, in Saturday’s regional championship at the Forum.

Cedric Bozeman scored 19 points and Jamal Sampson had 15 points and 14 rebounds for Mater Dei.

Forward Kirk Snyder scored 23 points and Pace added 17 for Upland (32-1).
