Matadors No Match for No. 1 Arizona

Jennie Finch (10-0) pitched a one-hitter with 12 strikeouts and top-ranked Arizona downed Cal State Northridge, 6-0, on Friday in the Cal State Fullerton softball tournament.

Sandra Milchiker singled for the Matadors (14-9) in the fifth inning.

Mackenzie Vandergeest of La Reina High, Nicole Giordano of Saugus and Erika Hanson of Thousand Oaks each singled for the Wildcats (30-1).

Antelope Valley 14, Rio Hondo 5--Monigue Saldana had two hits and drove in three runs in a Foothill Conference victory for the Marauders at Antelope Valley that was halted after five innings by the eight-run rule.

Melanie Aguilar had two hits for Antelope Valley (10-4, 3-0 in conference play), which scored nine runs in the first inning.

Cal Lutheran 2, St. Rose 1--Stephanie Cain’s run-scoring double in the seventh gave the Regals (8-3) a nonconference victory at the Disney Wide World of Sports Complex in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.

HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL

Chatsworth 11, Palisades 0--Cassie Shires pitched a one-hitter and struck out 12 batters for the Chancellors in a nonleague game called after five innings because of the 10-run rule at Chatsworth.

Shires hasn’t given up an earned run in 40 innings.

Cara Craft had three hits and scored three times, and Irene Mendieta had two hits and drove in two runs for Chatsworth (4-4).

La Canada 1, San Marino 0--Kelly Kalish allowed only a hit in the seventh inning and struck out nine for the Spartans in a Rio Hondo League victory at La Canada.

Courtney Turner hit a run-scoring double in the fourth inning for the Spartans (3-0, 1-0).

Hoover 2, El Segundo 0--Yvette Martinez hit a two-run double and freshman Shelly Henning pitched a three-hitter as the Tornadoes (5-3) won the Hoover tournament.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Westlake 18, Royal 0--Aaron Bert won at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, and the Warriors (6-0, 4-0) lost only three games in a Marmonte League victory at Westlake.

Camarillo 12, St. Bonaventure 6--Jason Mossembekker did not lose a game at No. 1 singles for the Scorpions (4-1) in a nonleague victory at Camarillo.

Vik Tiku and Marcos Robas swept at No. 1 doubles, 6-2, 6-1, 6-3, for St. Bonaventure (2-2).

HIGH SCHOOL SWIMMING

Royal 118, Agoura 61--Christine Creek won four events, recording Southern Section qualifying times in the 200 individual medley, the 100 breaststroke and two relays, to help the Highlanders win a Marmonte League opener at Rancho Simi Pool.

HIGH SCHOOL VOLLEYBALL

Sylmar def. Verdugo Hills, 9-15, 15-8, 15-7, 16-14--Chris Pelayo had 22 kills and 10 digs, and Hernan Garcia had 10 kills and 20 digs for the Spartans (2-1) in a nonleague match at Sylmar.

Grant def. Taft, 9-15, 15-10, 15-4, 15-4--Mike Charleston had 26 kills and six blocks and the Lancers (3-0) upset the two-time defending City Section champions in a nonleague match at Grant.

Moorpark def. Newbury Park, 15-0, 15-6, 15-10--Cary Hansen had 18 kills and eight digs for the Musketeers (6-0, 3-0) in a Marmonte League victory at Moorpark.

Thousand Oaks def. Westlake, 15-12, 10-15, 15-5, 10-15, 15-1--Travis Schoonover had 25 kills, Danny Raven added 19 and the Lancers (4-2, 2-1) won a Marmonte League game at Westlake.
