Peter Ackermann’s job as coach at Oaks Christian started like none other.

His first order of business was to fill a schedule for a team which was embarking on its inaugural season.

“I looked like a telemarketer,” Ackermann said. “I opened up the directory of high schools and started with A. Avalon was a nice call, but [I] get seasick so we’re going to pass on that this year.”

Oaks Christian, which opened in the fall with only freshmen and sophomores, will have no league affiliation for at least two years.

Jessica Creith inherited one of the toughest schedules in the region when she succeeded Steve Harrington as coach at Chaminade this season.

But she relishes the opportunity to play against the likes of Mater Dei, Hart, Valencia, Simi Valley and in the Foothill and Thousand Oaks tournaments.

“I think this is the best way to go,” Creith said.

“We did the same thing at [Cal State] Northridge when I played there. We played top-20 teams in the beginning, got all of the kinks out early and were ready at the end.”

Three games into the season, Chaminade showed no kinks in its 4-0 victory over Hart last week.

The Eagles (1-1-1), who lost to Mater Dei and tied Simi Valley, handed previously top-ranked Hart its first loss and moved into the rankings at No. 2.
