Alvin Brown, boys’ basketball coach at Kilpatrick, died early Sunday after collapsing while playing basketball, a school spokesman said. He was 29.

Brown was stricken during a church league game Saturday in Long Beach and taken to a hospital, said Kenneth Kondo of the L.A. County Probation Dept. Kondo said the cause of death has yet to be determined.

Brown was in his third year, second as coach, at Kilpatrick, a probation camp for juveniles. Brown, a Granada Hills High graduate, also served as a deputy probation officer.

A former player at University of San Francisco, Brown guided Kilpatrick to its first Alpha League title and a 27-3 record this season, the best in school history. The Mustangs advanced to the Southern Section Division V-AA final.

“It’s not only stunned the camp, but the kids as well,” Kondo said. “They’re shaken right now.”

Funeral services are pending.
