Stanford relied heavily on its five starters for scoring. The Cardinal reserves scored only six points with Teyo Johnson making both of his shots for four points and Tony Giovacchini scoring two points by making his only shot.

“You’ve got to dance with the gal that brung you, and that’s about where we are,” Montgomery said. “We didn’t need a lot of points [from the reserves]. We needed defense and solid team play more than anything else.”

Jacobsen led the Cardinal with 27 points.

Jacobsen said Maryland, the Cardinal’s opponent Saturday, is not unfamiliar to him even though the teams haven’t played this season.

“They’re in the ACC, so it seems like they’re on ESPN every other day,” Jacobsen said. “I’ve seen them play a lot.”
