All that talk about Ryan Hall of Big Bear High taking a serious shot at the national high school record in the boys’ two-mile run proved to be a bit premature in the Meet of Champions Distance Invitational at Azusa Pacific.

Hall, the No. 2-ranked high school miler in the nation last year, ran 8 minutes 58.7 seconds to win the two-mile by more than 28 seconds and record the fastest outdoor time in the nation this year. But the meet-record clocking was well off the national record of 8:36.3 set by Jeff Nelson of Burbank in 1979.

Seniors Amber Steen of Newport Beach Newport Harbor and Anita Siraki of Glendale Hoover had the other top performances in the meet.

Steen won the girls’ 1,600 meters in a meet-record 4:50.2.

Siraki placed first in the 3,200 in a meet-record 10:31.5 after finishing second in the 1,600 in 4:51.6.
