Santa Ana Defeats Fullerton in Baseball

Santa Ana scored five times in the eighth inning to pull out an 8-5 victory over visiting Fullerton in an Orange Empire Conference baseball game Tuesday.

Hornet relief pitcher Ryan McLean walked in the tying run with two outs, followed by a bases-clearing triple by Tony Alcantar for Santa Ana (20-4, 10-2).

Santa Ana relief pitcher Brandon Espinosa pitched the eighth inning to pick up the win and Dale Thayer pitched a scoreless ninth to pick up his fourth save.

Fullerton dropped to 10-14, 4-7-1.

In other conference games:

Orange Coast 9, Golden West 3--Jonathan Smith hit a three-run double as part of a six-run third inning for host Orange Coast (18-6, 8-4). Scott Beerer was four for four with a double and two RBIs and Ryan Marcos had two hits and two RBIs for the Pirates.

Riverside 9, Irvine Valley 5--Kevin Randel had a triple, double, single and drove in the winning run in the the eighth for host Riverside (23-4, 8-3).

Jason Mooneyham had a double, single and two RBIs for Irvine Valley (6-19, 1-11).

Saddleback 12, Cypress 7--Visiting Saddleback (19-6, 8-4) scored in every inning but the fifth. Marcus Wyatt was three for four including a home run in the third, and he had two walks, two runs scored and two runs batted in. Zach Dobek also had three hits for the Gauchos, as did Sal DeAnda for Cypress (18-9, 6-6).

In Orange Empire Conference women’s tennis:

Orange Coast 8, Fullerton 1--With the victory, the Pirates (9-3, 7-1) secured at least a share of the conference title. Stephanie Chang, filling in for the injured Veronica Sommer, won at No. 1 singles, 7-6, 6-2.
