Notre Dame Gets Mundy’s Worth

Share

Rainy days and Mundy always seem to get Alemany High down.

Jessica Mundy delivered a two-out, run-scoring double in the sixth inning and scored one batter later to help Notre Dame High defeat Alemany, 3-1, on Friday in a Mission League softball game at Alemany.

Notre Dame moved into a tie for second place with Alemany.

For Alemany (14-8, 5-2 in league play), it was the second disappointment against Notre Dame (16-6, 5-2), ranked No. 8 in the region by The Times.

On April 9, the Indians led Notre Dame, 1-0, when the game was called in the bottom of the fifth because of rain and hail. It will be replayed Friday.

Mundy, a sophomore first baseman who also plays volleyball and basketball, launched a double over the right fielder to drive in Megan Hayes and break a 1-1 tie. Mundy scored on Alemany’s fourth error.

“I was confident,” said Mundy, who had a second-inning single to break out of a slump that saw her average dip about 80 points to .320. “I knew I was due.”

Amanda De La Cerda (15-4) and Christie Sotelo (11-8) dueled impressively after allowing first-inning runs.

Notre Dame took a 1-0 lead when De La Cerda scored on a double steal. De La Cerda had two hits, including a double, and pitched a four-hitter.

Alemany answered in the first with Kaitlin Reiss’ run-scoring triple. Reiss finished two for three.

The Indians stranded five runners, two in scoring position. The Knights left 11 runners, six in scoring position. The teams combined to go one for 15 with runners in scoring position.

The difference was Mundy.

“When you’ve got two outs and don’t give up, that’s important,” Alemany Coach Charlie Briere said. “They got the key hit when they needed it.”
