Burden Sets Swim Record, Helps Rustlers Win State

Micha Burden of Golden West broke her own state record in the 1,650-yard freestyle Saturday, helping the Rustlers win their third consecutive women’s swimming state title at Solano College.

Burden won the event in 17 minutes 29.92 seconds, breaking her record set last season by nearly four seconds.

Golden West scored 602 points, followed by Riverside with 368 and Diablo Valley with 359. Saddleback finished fifth with 272 points.

Other winners on the final day of competition were Ashley Selleh of Golden West in the 100 freestyle (53.14) and the Rustlers’ 400 freestyle relay team (3:34.16).

The Golden West men’s team won its seventh consecutive state title, scoring 560 points to defeat Cuesta (393) and Diablo Valley (297 1/2). Orange Coast was sixth with 247 points.

Diogo Yabe won the 1,650 freestyle in 16:55.38 for the Rustlers. Pirotr Daranowski won the 200 backstroke (1:53.75), Deltone Stephens won the 200 butterfly (1:50.70) and Golden West took first in the 400 freestyle relay (3:03.63).

In the Southern California softball regional:

Fullerton wins twice--Fullerton’s Colleen Burdick pitched a no-hitter, striking out 17, in a 3-0 first-round victory over Allan Hancock, then held Cypress to one hit in a 6-0 victory at Fullerton College.

Fullerton (34-9-1), the No. 3 seed in Southern California, advances to today’s 2 p.m. championship game.
