All-Star Game Becomes Regal Affair
One of the Battle of the Valley all-star basketball games tonight at Cal State Northridge will have a Regal appearance.
Four girls who have committed to Cal Lutheran will be among the Southern Section players trying to extend a four-game winning streak against their City Section counterparts in the fifth annual event.
The girls’ game starts at 5 p.m., followed by the boys’ game at 7.
Guards Megan Wiser of Louisville High and Brusta Brown of Saugus signed with the Regals. Forward Stephanie Patterson and center Marissa Meadows of Valencia made oral commitments.
Tonight’s game is of particular interest to Cal Lutheran Coach Tim La Kose, who this morning will attend the graduation of his top six players from a team that went 19-6 last season.
“We’ll watch them graduate, then go out to Northridge and watch our future,” he said.
Brown and Meadows were the Foothill League’s co-most valuable players after leading their teams to the league co-championship.
The former rivals have already bonded during all-star workouts. Wiser and Meadows are planning to be roommates at Cal Lutheran.
“It’s been so much fun,” said Wiser, who averaged 16.9 points. “I’m so excited at the thought of playing with them next year.”
La Kose can’t wait to get them.
“I’m very excited about this recruiting class,” he said. “They’re all capable of contributing right away.”
The girls’ game will feature 17 players who have committed to four-year colleges, including two other sets of future teammates.
Crystal McCutcheon of Antelope Valley, The Times’ Valley player of the year, and Marmonte League tri-MVP Jennifer Lacy of Agoura have signed with Pepperdine. Harvard-Westlake’s Chantal Kazay and Nyasha Bralock will play at New York University.
Bralock, Kazay and UC San Diego-bound forward Karina Siam helped Harvard-Westlake win the Southern Section Division III-AA championship. Center Jasmine Wesley helped Montclair Prep capture the Division V-AA title.
The City girls will include Christina Aguinaga, Schquay Brignac and Denisha McCoy of Taft, which reached the City Championship semifinals, as well as league most valuable players Krystal Clay of Grant, Richelle Sherman of North Hollywood and Amber Burgin of Monroe.
The boys’ game will feature 11 players bound for four-year colleges, including Canoga Park forward Cecil Brown, the region leader with a 34.5-point average, who will attend UC Santa Barbara. High-scoring Shayne Berry of Chatsworth and DeWayne Anderson will also play for the City.
The Southern Section boys include three West Coast Conference players: Valley player of the year Cody Pearson of Notre Dame (Pepperdine), Scott Borchart of Chaminade (Santa Clara) and Dustin Villepigue of Simi Valley (Gonzaga).
