Fragrant, crumbly scones are welcome any time of day, but particularly at breakfast or with an afternoon cup of tea.

* Rockenwagner: On weekends you’ll find three types of tangerine-sized scones. They’re also available for takeout daily at Peet’s Coffee nearby, but you have to hurry because they sell out in a flash. There’s a moist, sweet one made with candied and fresh ginger and a little cream, a chewier five-grain scone and the cake-like triberry scone, which is the most moist of the three, bursting with strawberries, raspberries and blueberries. (Ginger and five-grain scones, $2; triberry scone, $2.50.) Rockenwagner, 2435 Main St., Santa Monica, (310) 399-6504.

* La Conversation: You can order a raisin, cherry or blueberry scone with breakfast or a dozen mini scones for a brunch or tea. They’re all made with lots of fruit and low-fat yogurt, giving them a nice, soft texture. (Scone, $1.75; mini scones, $9 a dozen--order a day ahead.) La Conversation, 638 N. Doheny Drive, West Hollywood, (310) 858-0950.

* Belwood Bakery: The walnut-raisin mini scones are crunchy on the outside and nice and soft on the inside. Take them home, heat them up and serve them with your favorite jams. (Scone, 50 cents; $6 a dozen.) Belwood Bakery, Brentwood Village, 11625 Barrington Court, Brentwood, (310) 471-6855; 12634 Ventura Blvd., Studio City, (818) 755-8853.

* La Brea Bakery: Here you can get a savory rosemary corn cake brushed with heavy cream, or a sweet berry or ginger scone. For crunchy texture, pick up the scone filled with chopped almonds, figs, cherries, currants and yellow raisins. Or hey--get an assortment. (Rosemary corn cake, $1.50; ginger and berry scone, $1.50; fruit and nut scone, $2.) La Brea Bakery, 624 S. La Brea Ave., Los Angeles, (323) 939-6813.

* Julienne: Try the cream currant scone (comes in two sizes) or indulge in a warm scone with lemon curd, sprinkled with sugar and torched to caramelize the top just like a creme bru^lee. (Scone, $1.75; mini scones, 70 cents; lemon creme bru^lee scone, $3.95.) Julienne, 2649 Mission St., San Marino, (626) 441-2299.

* Sweet Lady Jane: This classic currant scone has a deep golden crust and a moist biscuity center. It comes warm so that the butter melts right in, then you can spread it with delicious marmalade. (Currant scones, $1.50.) Sweet Lady Jane, 8360 Melrose Ave., West Hollywood, (323) 653-7145.
