Montebello Schurr 14, Montebello 12--Schurr thrust itself back into the thick of the Almont League race with a victory over previously undefeated Montebello at Montebello High.

With Montebello leading, 12-7, with 23 seconds left in the half, Schurr’s Martin Soto connected with Roy Rubio on a 25-yard, fourth-down scoring pass that turned out to be the decisive score for Schurr (7-2, 3-1).

Soto completed 13 of 20 passes for 190 yards, most of it courtesy of Rubio and his twin brother Rey Rubio. The brothers combined for 10 catches for 172 yards.

Quarterback David Montiel tried to rally the Oilers (8-1, 3-1), but a long completion to Chris Nevarez inside the Schurr 10-yard line was nullified because Montiel was past the line of scrimmage.

Bell Gardens defeated Alhambra Keppel, 56-6, to go to 3-1 in league, 6-2-1 overall.
