PLAYOFF ROUNDUP
In girls’ tennis:
Palm Desert 10, Calabasas 8--Erin Everly led Jennifer Joy, 5-3, when Everly collapsed with leg cramps and had to retire, giving Palm Desert a critical second-round set in a Southern Section Division IV semifinal match.
Joy, a slightly built sophomore, was being overpowered by Everly until the cramps began and left the Calabasas junior writhing on the ground.
“It was frightening,” Joy said.
The Coyotes (20-2) substituted for Everly, but little-used freshman Jodi Feigenbaum lost to Caroline Houston, 6-0, in the decisive last round, when Palm Desert (23-3) won four of six sets.
Third-seeded Calabasas and second-seeded Palm Desert had been tied, 3-3, after the first round of round-robin play, and were deadlocked, 6-6, with Calabasas leading in games, 50-47, after the second round.
“To have a match like this, that was so close, and have it take such a sudden turn, is just incredible,” said Saul Lopez, Palm Desert’s coach. “It’s unfortunate because we’d like to play everybody when they’re at their peak.”
