DIVISIONS III-IV FOOTBALL PLAYOFFS

Valencia 27, Crescenta Valley 15--Charles Burnley rushed for 185 yards and two touchdowns, including a 51-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter, for the Vikings (10-2) in a Division III quarterfinal game at Glendale High.

It was Valencia’s third playoff victory over Crescenta Valley in the last four years. The Vikings defeated Crescenta Valley, 42-19, in the first round in 1998 and 55-21 in the first round in 1999.

Hudson Gossard completed 16 of 31 passes for 235 yards for the fourth-seeded Falcons (11-1). He also rushed 16 times for 42 yards.

A jarring hit by linebacker Mark Munoz caused Gossard to fumble at the Valencia 35-yard line and Brandon Fuselier scooped up the loose ball and ran 60 yards for a touchdown that gave the Vikings a 13-0 lead with 2:15 left in the first half.

Danny Moody caught five passes for 87 yards for Crescenta Valley, but muffed a punt which Valencia’s Jess Arnds recovered at the Falcons 41-yard line. Burnley scored on a reverse on the next play to increase the Vikings lead to 19-7 mid-way through the third quarter.

Shara Hartoonian scored on a three-yard sweep to pull Crescenta Valley to within 13-7 early in the third quarter, and added an 11-yard touchdown run that cut Valencia’s lead to 19-13 with 5:21 left in the third quarter.
