Disastrous Drive Ends in Man’s Arrest
A suspected drunken driver was arrested Saturday in Costa Mesa after he allegedly drove his pickup into a pedestrian, a minivan and a fire hydrant--all within a few blocks, police said.
The truck hit the pedestrian near El Rio Circle and El Camino Drive, then struck the fire hydrant and finally, with police in pursuit, rammed a minivan in the 1100 block of Baker Street, said Police Lt. Daley Birney.
The pedestrian, 80-year-old Nirola Semerdjiev, was treated at Hoag Hospital for a broken right leg and hip.
Police arrested Michael McGinness of Riverside on suspicion of drunk driving, hit-and-run driving and driving on a suspended license. He was held Saturday evening at the City Jail in lieu of $65,000 bail.
