Torrey Pines def. San Clemente, 15-6, 16-14, 9-15, 15-13--San Clemente didn’t look like a road-weary team during its Division I regional final at Torrey Pines. The Tritons just looked overmatched.

San Clemente (34-4) kept the Falcons on their toes with late rallies in the second and fourth games but Torrey Pines had too much height and backcourt defense.

The Falcons (35-1) also kept San Clemente’s defense out of sync with its serves.

“They came out and served bullets at us,” San Clemente Coach Rob O’Rear said. “We had a hard time passing the ball.”

San Clemente was coming off a five-game victory Saturday at Clovis Buchanan, while Torrey Pines has enjoyed home-court advantage throughout the state playoffs.

About the only concern for Torrey Pines was that San Clemente gave the Falcons their only loss this season at the Dave Mohs tournament at Huntington Beach Edison High.

The Tritons rallied from a 13-7 deficit in the second game and took a 14-13 lead on Katy Daly’s block. But Torrey Pines got a sideout and scored three consecutive points to take a two-game lead.

San Clemente came back from an 8-2 deficit in the fourth game and trailed 13-9 before closing to 14-13 on Megan Card’s block.

After consecutive sideouts, Torrey Pines ended the two-hour match on a kill by Tyler Bowman.

Daly had 18 kills to lead the Tritons.
