Dorsey Football Under Investigation

Dorsey High’s football team, which is scheduled to play Fremont in the City Section semifinals Friday, is under investigation for allegedly using ineligible players and could face ouster from the playoffs.

Barbara Fiege, the City Section’s director of athletics, met with other section administrators Tuesday to investigate whether Dorsey used ineligible players in its 20-14 quarterfinal victory over Westchester last Wednesday. A decision on the matter is expected today, said Jeff Halpern, a section administrator.

The investigation reportedly was begun after Westchester representatives on Monday questioned the eligibility of two Dorsey players who had previously attended Westchester.

“Dorsey has done no wrong,” said Robert Simmons, Dorsey’s athletic director.

Both teams practiced Tuesday, pending the section’s decision. If Dorsey is forced to forfeit, Westchester would play Fremont at Gardena High on Friday night.

Westchester also was involved in a football playoff controversy in 1998.

The Comets defeated Granada Hills in the quarterfinals, but had to forfeit the victory and were removed from the playoffs when it was discovered that they had used an ineligible player in their playoff opener against Locke. Granada Hills replaced Westchester in the semifinals and was defeated by Wilmington Banning.
