SANTA BARBARA COUNTY

LAKE CACHUMA--Fishing is slow but trout action is finally picking up for those trolling Needlefish and night crawlers. Red-ear perch are biting as well. Bass are moving deeper and biting on crankbaits early.

ORANGE COUNTY

IRVINE LAKE--Top catfish was a 15-5 caught on mackerel at the dam. Sunday is “Salute to America’s Heroes Day,” with gate proceeds going to New York City fire and police departments. Trout season opens Thursday.

LAGUNA NIGUEL LAKE--Catfish are biting late on mackerel, and bass are biting early on plastics. During the day, an occasional bluegill or crappie is being caught.

SANTA ANA RIVER LAKES--Trout season opens Nov. 3. Meanwhile, it’s strictly catfish.

SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY

BIG BEAR LAKE--Trout are being caught mostly by trollers using Needlefish and night crawlers. Few limits.

JESS RANCH LAKES--Trout fishing is fair to good on Power Bait. Lots of limits.

RIVERSIDE COUNTY

LAKE PERRIS--Bob Kopple, Rancho Cucamonga, 10-2 bass on a top-water Rapala. Ann Hargrove, Los Angeles, five catfish totaling 14-6 on night crawlers at the marina. Fishing for both species is fair.

LAKE SKINNER--Fishing is fair for striped bass (top-water plugs and chicken livers), largemouth bass (crankbaits, plastic worms) and catfish (mackerel).

SAN DIEGO COUNTY

LAKE CUYAMACA--Last week’s plant of steelhead did not improve the bite. Those catching trout are slowly moving their baits and lures. A 5-0 trout was caught on a Panther Martin.

DIXON LAKE--Trout season opens Nov. 3. Meanwhile, fishing is slow.

SAN DIEGO CITY LAKES--The San Vicente bass bite is very good with fish to seven pounds biting on plastic worms and spoons. A 37-6 catfish was caught there. El Capitan is slow but bass fishermen are getting some action.

EASTERN SIERRA

The general season ends at dusk Wednesday. A 7-1 rainbow was caught on a jig at South Lake and big fish are being seen more often than caught at all the lakes above Bishop Creek. The creek is running very low. Big fish also were taken from Gull and Silver lakes on the June Lake Loop. Big browns are being targeted with some success at Twin Lakes in Bridgeport. Fly anglers are doing well on the Lower Owens (open year-round), Upper Owens, Rock Creek Lake (from float tubes using streamers), East and West Walker Rivers (despite very low flows).
