Edwards Headed to Chargers

Free-agent linebacker Donnie Edwards agreed to terms on a five-year contract Saturday with San Diego, where he was reunited with Charger Coach Marty Schottenheimer.

Edwards, a former UCLA standout, led Kansas City in tackles the last four seasons. Schottenheimer was Kansas City’s coach for Edwards’ first three seasons.

All-pro fullback Mike Alstott finalized a four-year, $8-million contract extension that includes a $2.5-million signing bonus and a no-trade clause with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.... J.J. Stokes restructured his contract with the San Francisco 49ers, giving the 49ers enough available cash to sign their draft picks and allowing Stokes to remain with the team. Stokes was to make $3.5 million next season.... Free-agent defensive tackle James Cannida signed with the Indianapolis Colts, reuniting with Tony Dungy.... Fullback James Hodgins will stay with the St. Louis Rams, who matched the Denver Broncos’ five-year, $5.5-million offer sheet.... Marcellus Wiley, an all-pro defensive end with the San Diego Chargers, will have his Santa Monica St. Monica High jersey No. 3 retired in a 1:30 p.m. ceremony Monday at the school.
