Wisdom, Not Hysteria, Should Guide Avila Case
Re “The Rush to Judge Avila,” Dana Parsons, Aug. 11:
As a person who was condemned before being charged, I find Dana Parsons’ comments on Alejandro Avila a fundamental defense of the rights that our Constitution grants all citizens. As a professor of criminology bluntly put it: “The sheriff’s job is to catch people, not to try them, convict them and sentence them.... This is a country built on very important principles, and you just don’t throw them to the wind.”
Wisdom, not official hysteria, should guide the investigation of an abhorrent crime. The hypocrisy of media-seeking is underscored if you think about the hundreds of other child victims of similar crimes that go unnoticed.
