Major photos go to UC Santa Cruz
UC Santa Cruz has received a donation of 160 photographs from Bay Area photographer Pirkle Jones and his late wife, poet and photographer Ruth-Marion Baruch, a gift valued at more than $1 million.
The donation includes the pair’s landmark 1968 series on the Black Panther party, recently published as a book, and their complete archive.
Jones, 88, got acquainted with the university in 1969, when he taught at a workshop on campus led by Ansel Adams. The Jones-Baruch donation will join other photographers’ works and archives in the university library’s special collections.
