We Can’t Afford Corporate Welfare
Re “Law May Bar Davis’ Plan for Fund Shift,” Dec. 12:
Gov. Gray Davis is right to go after redevelopment revenues to relieve the state budget crisis. Redevelopment agencies annually divert $2.1 billion in taxes away from public services and into the pockets of big-box retailers, hotel chains, car dealers and team owners. That’s 10% of property taxes squandered on corporate welfare, including [San Diego’s] $30-million seat guarantee to Chargers owner Alex Spanos.
Redevelopment revenues should be restored to serve the public, not to subsidize wealthy interests.
