Unbeaten Westchester Wins Tournament
Senior Trevor Ariza scored 19 points to lead the Westchester boys’ basketball team to a 59-43 victory over Oakland Technical on Saturday in the championship game of the Bill Bobier Challenge I at the Holiday Prep Classic in Las Vegas.
Ariza, a 6-foot-8 forward, also had nine rebounds and two steals for Westchester (13-0), No. 3 in The Times’ rankings. He was named the tournament’s most valuable player after averaging 23 points per game.
Marcus Brown and Bobby Brown each had 12 points for the Comets, who outscored Oakland Technical, 38-20, in the second half.
Santa Ana Mater Dei, ranked No. 1 by The Times among Southland boys’ basketball teams, suffered its first defeat of the season, losing to New York City Brother Rice, 88-76, in a championship semifinal at the Fort Myers (Fla.) Bishop Verot tournament. The Monarchs (10-1) will play Bronx (N.Y.) St. Raymond’s in the third-place game Monday.
