Poly, Price Could Meet

Defending champions of the Southern Section’s largest and smallest divisions could meet this week in the West Coast Challenge boys’ basketball tournament at Lynwood High.

Long Beach Poly, the reigning Division I-AA champion, could play Division V-A champion Los Angeles Price in a quarterfinal game. Moreno Valley Canyon Springs, No. 7 in The Times’ rankings, and No. 15 L.A. Verbum Dei are also in the tournament, which runs Thursday through Monday.

Fourteen of the teams in The Times’ girls’ basketball rankings are entered in the 32-team Chino Hills Ayala tournament, which begins Thursday at Ayala and Don Lugo high schools.

The Larry Doyle Memorial tournament, co-hosted by Marina and Edison high schools in Huntington Beach, begins Thursday at Edison. Six of the 16 entries are in The Times’ top 25. There is a potential second-round matchup Friday at Marina between No. 3 Santa Ana Mater Dei and No. 7 San Clemente.

The top five teams in The Times’ girls’ water polo rankings are scheduled to compete Friday and Saturday in the 16-team Newport Harbor/Corona del Mar Holiday Cup. The field also includes San Diego Section powers Poway and Carlsbad.

Top-ranked Santa Ana Foothill, the three-time Southern Section Division I champion, could face either No. 3 Corona del Mar or No. 5 Santa Barbara in the semifinals Saturday morning. Foothill defeated Poway, 10-2, in last season’s championship game.

The title game is set for 4:05 p.m. on Saturday at Newport Harbor.

Pitcher Brooke Weekley from Mission Viejo Capistrano Valley and pitcher/infielder Candace Baker from Cypress have signed to play softball for Cal State Fullerton.

All-City receiver Daymeion Hughes of Los Angeles Crenshaw has committed to California. Defensive back Clarence Simpson of Sylmar has committed to Washington.
