Santa Margarita maintains a firm grip on the No. 1 ranking after outscoring its three opponents, 9-1, in pool play at the Student Sports tournament in Tampa, Fla., on Friday and Saturday. Santa Barbara also performed well in the tournament, outscoring its opponents by a 14-0 margin to jump to sixth after not being ranked the previous week. Irvine Woodbridge, the preseason No. 1, moves from third to second after a shootout victory over Brea Olinda in the championship game of the Brea Olinda tournament on Saturday.

Capistrano Valley stays at No. 1 as Santa Margarita remains a work in progress, especially after losing midfielders Shannon Foley and Britney Perkowski to injuries in the Trabuco Hills tournament. The Eagles fell, 2-1, to Mission Viejo with Foley (bruised hip) and Perkowski (sprained ankle) out after beating winless Newport Harbor last week. The Eagles trade places with previous No. 3 North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake, which continued to roll with three nonleague victories. Dana Point Dana Hills, which has outscored opponents, 25-10, moves up to No. 8. Arcadia, which has beaten San Clemente and tied Mission Viejo, Woodbridge and Diamond Bar, enters the rankings at No. 9, while No. 10 Woodland Hills El Camino Real advanced to Monday’s championship of the South Torrance tournament.

Gabbie Domanic returned from Australia, where she had been competing in the FINA World Cup women’s water polo tournament, and helped Santa Ana Foothill defeat Santa Margarita, 8-4, in a nonleague game Friday. Corona del Mar received goals from six different players Friday in a 6-5 victory over Newport Harbor. All four teams will have a chance to play again this week at the Newport Harbor-Corona del Mar Holiday Cup. Fifth-ranked Santa Barbara will also play in the Holiday Cup tournament. Riverside Poly and Upland, the top two teams in Southern Section Division V this season, met for the second time in two weeks Thursday. Monique Blanchard scored four goals to lead Riverside Poly to an 8-6 victory.

Santa Ana Calvary Chapel solidified its spot as the top-ranked team by finishing seventh in the Reno Tournament of Champions. The Eagles had five wrestlers make it to the semifinals in the prestigious national event, with Joe Williams winning the 189-pound title. Second-ranked Santa Ana had originally planned to wrestle at Reno but canceled the trip because of inclement weather. Rosemead established itself as the team to beat in Division II with a convincing 75-point victory over North Torrance in the Rosemead tournament. Orange El Modena had an impressive showing in its tournament, winning by 34.5 points over San Diego Mt. Carmel. Yucca Valley debuts in the top 10 after placing fourth at the Oxnard Rio Mesa dual tournament. Yucca Valley was fourth at the Bakersfield East tournament two weeks ago.
