PLAYOFF POSSIBILITIES

* Inglewood vs. Villa Park, Division II-AA quarterfinals. Spartan big men Brice Prather and Sean Phaler would have their hands full with Sentinel center DeAngelo Collins.

* Redondo Beach Redondo Union vs. Santa Margarita, Division II-A semifinals. A battle of fast-paced teams.

* Compton Dominguez vs. Lakewood Mayfair, Division III-AA quarterfinals. Could the Dons’ tradition--and a big-time game from guard Keion Kindred--help them unseat the No. 2 seed?

* Gardena Serra vs. Downey Calvary Chapel, Division IV-A semifinals. These teams were on a collision course to meet earlier in the season before Serra lost to Los Angeles Price in Calvary Chapel’s tournament.

WORST MATCHUP

* Santa Ana Mater Dei vs. Hemet, Division II-AA first round. No offense to the 11-12 Bulldogs, but they will need a lot more bite to prevent the Monarchs from giving Coach Gary McKnight his 600th career victory.

TANTALIZING TIDBITS

* All 57 teams that petitioned the Southern Section to receive entry into the playoffs under the 11-win rule were admitted. Five teams that were eligible to petition--Long Beach Jordan, Santa Ana Foothill, Alhambra Keppel, Whittier La Serna and Murrieta Calvary Chapel--did not.

* Santa Margarita and Mayfair, seeded second in Division II-A and Division III-AA, respectively, did not receive first-round byes like the third- and fourth-seeded teams in their divisions because they finished second in their league.

* Glendora Coach Mike LeDuc could face any one of three former assistants--Rowland Heights Rowland’s Gordon Hamlow, Riverside Poly’s Yancy Dodson and San Bernardino San Gorgonio’s Ty Stockham--in the Division I-A semifinals.

* Orange (13-13), which went 0-10 in the Century League and has not won a game since Dec. 29, plays host to Katella (12-13) in a Division II-AA wild-card game.
