Thousand Oaks 64, Westlake 53--Kenny Glass’ name was penciled in the scorebook. His name was on the gym wall. His photo was in the program.

But Glass, 16, a junior center at Westlake High who was also a standout volleyball player, died in the early morning hours of Dec. 28 when he lost control of his Mercedes-Benz SUV and struck a brick wall in Thousand Oaks. Another Westlake High student, Jordan Bass, 16, was a passenger in Glass’ car and was also killed.

The Warriors returned to the court Friday night, and though the Warriors lost in a Marmonte League opener, Westlake players and coaches found victory in moving ahead.

“It’s been the toughest week of my life,” said Westlake center Devin Entrikin. “The time on the court is a release. It’s a time to put all your worries away and try to win. But it’s tough to concentrate on the game.”

Glass had played in Westlake’s victory over Warren in the Brea tournament only hours before his death. He was a part-time starter, an honor student and a college prospect as a volleyball player.

Westlake Coach Rich Sanders hopes the memory of Glass will serve to remind his players that youth carries responsibility.

“There is a lesson we must take from this,” Sanders said. “Kids need to learn to police themselves. Parents, teachers, coaches can’t be there every hour.”
