Farewell to Silverdome

The Detroit Lions were 116-92-1 (.556) at the Silverdome, which opened in 1975 and played host to the Lions’ final game on Sunday. A look at some memorable events that took place there:

* 1975: Elvis Presley performed in a stadium for the last time here. Most major music acts also played there, from the Rolling Stones to ‘N Sync.

* 1982: San Francisco beat Cincinnati, 26-21, on Jan. 24 in the first Super Bowl played in a northern city.

* 1985: A snowstorm March 5 caused extensive damage to the roof and forced the Pistons to play temporarily at Joe Louis Arena.

* 1987: The pope and Wrestlemania III each drew more than 93,000 people to the stadium.

* 1988: An NBA record that stood for a decade was set when 61,983 fans watched the Pistons play Boston in a regular-season game.

* 1992: The Lions beat Dallas, 38-6, on Jan. 5 for their only playoff victory since winning the 1957 championship.

* 1994: Green Bay’s Brett Favre threw a touchdown pass to a wide-open Sterling Sharpe to beat Detroit, 28-24, in the playoffs on Jan. 8.

* 1994: The Silverdome hosted the first World Cup soccer match played indoors, on specially installed natural grass.

* 1997: Barry Sanders surpassed the 2,000-yard rushing mark, the Lions made the playoffs and Reggie Brown had a career-ending neck injury in the 1997 regular-season finale.
