A Vote of Confidence for LAPD Chief Parks
The L.A. Police Protective League’s power play should be seen for what it is (“LAPD Union Says Poll Shows Vast Majority Oppose Parks,” Jan. 18). The peer pressure among the rank and file of a police department is destructive at times. Otherwise mature, intelligent and capable police personnel get swept up in the opportunity to lash out at whatever seems to be bothering them; bashing and blaming the chief makes some feel good.
Being a former chief of police (and recipient of a police union’s “no confidence” vote several years ago), I know Chief Bernard Parks and respect the fine job, in extremely difficult circumstances, that he is doing. Mayor James Hahn and members of the Police Commission should put the league’s “no confidence vote” where it belongs, in the trash. If Parks wants to continue in his job for another five years the city of Los Angeles should leap at the opportunity to retain him.
