More to Game Than Red, White and Blue
In her July 4 column, “Men’s Game Desperately Needs a Strong Sampras,” Diane Pucin implies that only American tennis players are exciting to watch.
She dismisses world No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt as a “temporary champion” and one of a new breed of “bash the ball as hard as possible” players. If Pucin knew anything about tennis, she’d know that Hew- itt’s game is actually very similar to that of Andre Agassi. Besides, why is she so upset about hard-hitting players in the men’s game, but cheers the Williams sisters’ domination of the women’s game?
But then, maybe Pucin is just a “temporary” writer for The Times who will be dismissed when a legitimate columnist comes along.
