One of three inmates charged in the racially motivated attack on a black inmate, who now requires a wheelchair, was sentenced Friday to 42 years to life in state prison.

Superior Court Judge Curtis Rappe imposed the sentence on Ramon Brizuela, 28, who was convicted July 1 of attempted murder. Two other inmates, Carlos Roberto Robledo, 21, and Jesus Alberto Fonseca, 25, await sentencing.

The victim was stabbed 21 times, beaten and dragged at the Pitchess Detention Center in Castaic, prosecutors said. He was in a coma for eight months.
