Compton’s former mayor sued the city, its city clerk and its current mayor Wednesday, alleging they violated his civil rights and manipulated the names on last June’s ballot, causing him to lose the mayoral election.

Omar Bradley’s lawsuit in Los Angeles Superior Court names Mayor Eric J. Perrodin, former City Council candidate Leslie Irving and City Clerk Charles Davis, among others, said Hermez Moreno, Bradley’s lawyer.

Former council candidate Melanie Andrews filed a similar lawsuit.

Bradley is seeking more than $5 million, Moreno said.

Neither Perrodin nor Davis could be reached for comment.

The suit is one more wrinkle in Compton’s contested election of June 5, 2001.

Perrodin outpolled Bradley, a two-term incumbent.

Bradley contested the election, and Superior Court Judge Judith Chirlin in February agreed with Bradley and reinstated him, citing ballot irregularities and other problems.

Days later, the state’s 2nd District Court of Appeal stayed Chirlin’s ruling and put Perrodin back in, pending a final review of the case.

Bradley’s suit echoes many of Chirlin’s findings, Moreno said.
