County to Appeal Order to Release Police Letter
The Board of Supervisors this week ordered the county counsel’s office to appeal a judge’s order that prosecutors release a letter written to Huntington Beach police citing a lack of evidence for filing criminal charges against an officer.
Huntington Beach paid $25,000 to one person who said he was punched and kicked by Officer Edmond Kennedy, who was off duty at the time. A day later, a 17-year-old said the officer threw him to the ground in response to a vulgar gesture. Kennedy has denied wrongdoing.
Denied a copy of the letter by the district attorney’s office, the Los Angeles Times sued. An Orange County Superior Court judge ordered the letter released.
