Lewis’ Promoter Steps Down
Lennox Lewis’ promoter, Gary Shaw, has resigned the week of Lewis’ blockbuster match against Mike Tyson, but the resignation will not be effective until after Saturday’s fight.
Shaw’s differences are not with Lewis, but with Kathy Duva, head of the Main Events boxing organization, which represents Lewis’ interests in this country.
Shaw’s departure means the promoter, 57, will not be representing another Main Events fighter, Fernando Vargas, when he faces Oscar De La Hoya on Sept. 14.
“I feel terrible about that,” said Shaw, who has been with Main Events for 2 1/2 years. “I feel an obligation to Fernando.”
Reports circulated Wednesday about Shaw’s future. According to one, Shaw was going into business with Shelly Finkel, Tyson’s manager, but Shaw denied that.
