From Times Wire Reports

Thousands of doses of a radiation-blocking potassium iodide tablet soon could be shipped to protect San Luis Obispo County residents from potential leaks at the Diablo Canyon Nuclear Generating Station.

After the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, the federal Nuclear Regulatory Commission said it had allocated enough money to supply the drug to everyone living within 10 miles of a nuclear power plant.

About 22,000 people reside within a 10-mile radius of Diablo Canyon.

State and county health and emergency services officials will meet June 28 to complete a plan for distribution of potassium iodide.
