Upsets Eliminate No. 2 Purdue, No. 3 Iowa St.

Old Dominion was playing for both respect and a berth in the NCAA tournament’s round of 16. The Lady Monarchs got both in a Mideast Regional game at West Lafayette, Ind.

Hamchetou Maiga had 17 points and 17 rebounds Monday to lead seventh-seeded Old Dominion to a 74-70 overtime victory over second-seeded Purdue, last year’s runner-up in the NCAA tournament. Old Dominion (27-5) will play Kansas State in the Mideast Regional semifinals Saturday in Milwaukee.

Connecticut 86, Iowa 48--Unbeaten Connecticut got 22 points from Sue Bird and 16 from Diana Taurasi in the victory at Storrs, Conn. The top-seeded Huskies (35-0) will play Penn State Saturday at Milwaukee in the regional semifinals.

Lindsey Meder led ninth-seeded Iowa (18-11) with 14 points.

MIDWEST REGIONAL

Brigham Young 75, Iowa State 69--Rallying from a 13-point deficit at Ames, Iowa, Brigham Young (24-8) became only the third 11th-seeded team to advance to the round of 16 since the women’s tournament expanded to 64 teams in 1994. BYU, which had never won an NCAA tournament game before this year, will play Tennessee Saturday in the regional semifinals at Ames, Iowa. Third-seeded Iowa State ends the season 24-9.

Vanderbilt 61, Arizona State 35--Zuzi Klimesova scored 15 points as top-seeded Vanderbilt (29-6) beat ninth-seeded Arizona State (25-9) at Nashville. Vanderbilt will play North Carolina on Saturday at Ames.

North Carolina 72, Minnesota 69--Coretta Brown scored 19 points as fourth-seeded North Carolina (26-8) beat Minnesota (22-8) at Chapel Hill, N.C.

EAST REGIONAL

South Carolina 75, Cincinnati 56--Teresa Geter had 21 points as third-seeded South Carolina (24-6) defeated sixth-seeded Cincinnati (27-5) at Columbia, S.C.

WEST REGIONAL

Stanford 77, Tulane 55--Second-seeded Stanford (32-2) advanced to the regional semifinals at Boise, Idaho, with the victory over Tulane (24-11) at Palo Alto. The Cardinal will play Colorado.

Oklahoma 66, Villanova 53--Top-seeded Oklahoma (29-3) wore down Villanova (20-11) before 11,245 at Noble Center, the largest crowd to see a women’s game at Norman, Okla. Oklahoma will face fellow Big 12 team Texas Tech on Saturday at Boise.
