Cerritos Able to Defend Swim Title

Charlton Krautim of Cerritos High won the 200-yard individual medley Thursday and led off the winning 200 medley relay to help the Dons defend their Southern Section Division IV boys’ swimming title at Belmont Plaza in Long Beach.

Krautim won the individual medley in 1 minute 55.48 seconds and Cerritos won the opening relay in 1:41.50 to accumulate 60 of the team’s 207 points. Cerritos entered the final event, the 400 freestyle relay, with a 19-point lead over Placentia Valencia and finished second to hold off the Tigers (who won the relay in a meet record 3:17.97) by a 207-194 margin. Valencia also set a record in the two-year-old division in the 200 freestyle relay (1:30.13) and Ryan McNeill of Valencia set meet records in the boys’ 100 butterfly (51.39) and 500 freestyle (4:36.18).

In the butterfly, McNeill upset Hidenaga Murakami of L.A. Pilgrim (51.50), who had lowered his division record in the Wednesday’s preliminaries. McNeill topped his day-old record in the 500 freestyle by more than seven seconds. Murakami came back to break his division record in the 100 backstroke for the second consecutive day, winning in 53.35.

Brea Olinda won the girls’ title with 239.5 points and Hesperia Sultana was second with 204.5. Melissa Wong of Whitney set division records in the 200 freestyle (1:51.82) and 500 freestyle (4:59.31). Emlynn Tursick of Carpinteria set a division record in the 100 backstroke (57.79) and Jennifer Cook of Valencia broke her division record in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.26).

Laguna Hills 5, Irvine 4--Daniel Miltenberger (9-2) gave up six hits and two earned runs with eight strikeouts in a complete-game victory for Laguna Hills (17-7-1, 14-2), which clinched the Sea View championship at Irvine.

Woodland Hills El Camino Real 13, Woodland Hills Taft 0--Will Savage pitched a perfect game with nine strikeouts and the Conquistadores (23-4, 11-1) clinched the West Valley League title with a victory at Taft (2-18-11, 0-14).

In boys’ volleyball:

Granada Hills d. Sepulveda Monroe, 11-15, 15-11, 15-5, 15-1--Taku Uechi had 19 kills and Tommy Patikamanant had 46 assists as seventh-seeded Granada Hills (11-2) upset No. 2 Monroe (11-2) in a City Championship quarterfinal.
