Michigan Bounces Back Big Against Michigan State

John Navarre threw three touchdown passes and ran for another score as No. 15 Michigan beat Michigan State, 49-3, Saturday at Ann Arbor, Mich., the Wolverines’ biggest win over their in-state rival since 1947.

The Wolverines, 7-2 overall, 4-1 in the conference, bounced back from their worst loss at home in 35 years, a 25-point setback to Iowa.

The Spartans (3-6, 1-4) have lost four in a row by an average of 28.5 points.

Navarre completed 16 of 27 passes for 229 yards and no interceptions, and accounted for four touchdowns. B.J. Askew scored two touchdowns and set career-highs with 149 yards rushing in 32 carries. Ronald Bellamy caught five passes for a career-high 124 yards and two touchdowns.

Damon Dowdell, making his second start in place of suspended quarterback Jeff Smoker, completed 15 of 34 passes for 178 yards. Charles Rogers caught four passes for 75 yards.

No. 20 Penn State 18, Illinois 7 -- Larry Johnson rushed for 279 yards to break his own school record and scored on an 84-yard run as the Nittany Lions (6-3, 3-3) defeated the Illini (3-6, 2-3) at State College, Pa.

Johnson had a second 84-yard touchdown run called back because of a holding penalty early in the fourth quarter.

Northwestern 41, Indiana 37 -- Former Diamond Bar High standout Jason Wright rushed for a career-high 219 yards and four touchdowns as the Wildcats (3-7, 1-5) defeated the Hoosiers (3-6, 1-4) at Evanston, Ill.
