Marshall Wins, Coach Arrested

Stan Hill, starting in place of injured Byron Leftwich, threw four touchdown passes and scored on a one-yard run with five seconds left to lift Marshall over Miami of Ohio, 36-34, in a Mid-American Conference game Tuesday night at Huntington, W.Va.

After the game, Miami defensive coordinator John Wauford was arrested after allegedly shoving a Marshall fan.

The fan, Robert A. Flaugher of Pickerington, Ohio, hit his head on the artificial turf. He was taken on a stretcher to St. Mary’s Medical Center and was in stable condition with a concussion.

Wauford was charged with battery, a misdemeanor. He was transported to Cabell County Magistrate Court and posted bail.

Marshall (7-2, 5-1) can win its sixth consecutive East Division title with a victory over Ohio on Nov. 23. The East Division winner will host the conference championship game on Dec. 7. Miami (7-4, 5-2) lost to Marshall for the fifth consecutive time.

The referee doll that once hung from the front door of Joe Paterno’s house has been taken down, but the Penn State coach refuses to talk about it.

Paterno would not comment when asked about the adornment, which showed an official, yellow flag in hand, apparently hanging by its neck from the door knocker.

The doll had been taken down Monday afternoon. When Paterno was asked if it was there, he implied that he didn’t know.

“I don’t ever use the front door -- I go in the garage,” Paterno said. “I have one of those things, you know, you push the button and the garage door goes up. That’s what I use.”

Colorado receiver Jeremy Bloom, the defending World Cup champion in moguls skiing, has received permission from Coach Gary Barnett to compete in an event in Finland on Dec. 19.... Virginia Tech linebacker Michael Crawford underwent more tests for lymphoma but most likely will play Nov. 20 against West Virginia.... Illinois Coach Ron Turner said receiver Brandon Lloyd, who sustained a hip flexor against Wisconsin, is “50-50” to play against Ohio State.... Georgia receiver Terrence Edwards, who suffered a separated right shoulder against Mississippi, is out of action for at least three weeks.... Central Michigan Coach Mike DeBord received a three-year contract extension through 2006.... Donnie Kirkpatrick will not return as Chattanooga coach and will be reassigned within the university.
