Old Money in Good Spot

Share

When Old Money made her U.S. debut on Jan. 16, she picked up right where she had left off in her native Australia.

The 5-year-old mare got a good trip in the allowance race and went on to win by 1 1/2 lengths as part of an entry that was the 6-5 favorite. It was her fourth consecutive victory.

Since then, Old Money, fed a steady diet of graded stakes, is winless in five starts. After running in a Grade III, three Grade II races and a Grade I, the daughter of Old Spice is dropped into a softer spot today.

Owned by Robert and Janice McNair’s Stonerside Stable and trained by Ron McAnally, Old Money is an 8-5 favorite in the third, which kicks off a pick six with a carryover of $88,143.

While Old Money may be the one to beat in the mile turf race, Netherland is the one to catch. Owned by Alan Gilbert and Mike Pegram and trained by Bob Baffert, the 4-year-old Roy filly won the last time she was able to get a clear lead and she will be in front today.

The field is completed by the Bobby Frankel-trained duo of L’Emeraude and Honestly Darling, Live Your Dreams and Kabylia.

Like Old Money, Honestly Darling, Kabylia and Live Your Dreams are all winners over the Santa Anita turf course.

Race of the day: The sixth, the second leg of the pick four, is a wide-open sprint (six furlongs) for $20,000 3-year-olds that drew a field of 11. Sunday In Moscow, who finished third against $32,000 claimers a week ago, is the 3-1 favorite on Jeff Tufts’ morning line.

Who’s hot: Bill Morey. The trainer won with 12 of his first 36 starters at Bay Meadows. Morey’s only starter today is Winning Stripes in the sixth, a one-mile race for 2-year-old maidens.

Who’s not: Donnie Meche. The jockey won with only two of his first 42 mounts at Keeneland.

Exotically speaking: A pick three singling Netherland in the third, using Blushing Ciel, Lake Ray and Kissin Paster in the fourth and using Amanda Louise, Iza Beauty and Passionforanna in the fifth.

Winners: Previous day/meet total: 2/28. Money: Previous day/meet total: $12.40/$167.60. Total money bet: $206.
