Newbury Park biotech firm Amgen has given Cal Lutheran University $135,000 for a science institute to be held in June.
The funds will be used to create four, one-week workshops to help middle- and high-school teachers improve science instruction.
Up to 60 teachers will receive $1,000 grants to attend the workshops.
Each educator selected will get a $500 stipend, $300 to buy science supplies for her or his school and $200 to attend a follow-up workshop.
